The Hours Film Review Essay Example
The Hours Film Review Essay Everywhere we go, we constantly find ourselves furious and dissatisfied with film adaptations that never seem to serve us justice The book is just sooooooo much better!. But is it really fair to imprint this impression on all film adaptations of much-loved novels? The answer is NO. From the director of Billy Elliot, Stephen Daldry and his talented team on-and-off camera will prove you wrong. It is insanely difficult for most of us, to even begin to imagine the intolerable pain derived from those who endure immense depression or those who suffer from some form of mental illness. They are locked up in a jail that resembles their mind and are unable to break free. The Hours encapsulates this emotional stress endured by women across different eras to utter perfection.Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel written by Michael Cunningham, The Hours depicts the lives of three women in three generations along with the twisted struggles they experience imprisoned in their hopeless souls. Au stralian actress Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, Rabbit Hole), captures the role of Virginia Woolf in 1925, working on Mrs. Dalloway (a stream-of-consciousness novel) about the hostess of society, whose artificial nature of perfection masks her inner turmoil. Julianne Moore (The End of An Affair) portrays stereotypical American housewife, Laura Brown residing in 1951 American suburbia a woman who feels compelled to maintain her loyalty towards her son and husband (John C. Reilly). What may seem like a contentful heart and cheerful face may possibly be something else underneath the surface. Critically acclaimed actress, Meryl Streep (Adaptation, Sophies Choice) as Clarissa Vaughan in 2001, neglects her partner for the chapter in her life that she is reluctant to close, whom is shared with AIDS sufferer, Richard Brown played by Ed Harris.Kidman stands taller than the rest, delivering an extraordinary Oscar-worthy performance of astonishing courage, revealing the destructive war between her intellectual mind and the chaos revolving around her personal world. Every gesture and every facial expression convinces the audience that this character was tailor-made especially for her. Streep reflects this level of performance and as always, handles her role carefully producing a believable performance as a result. Her switch between absolute lunacy to a cheerful hostess is measured to perfection. But there is always one that lets the team down. Moores approach to the complex character of Laura Brown shows that she is just another pretty lady in a pretty dress. The recurring empty face is a snooze-fest that blocks the audience from entering her state-of-mind. Last but certainly not least, it is not a surprise that the youngest member of the cast, young and adorable Ritchie Brown played by Jack Rovello, angelically lights up the screen, making us aww time after time, whilst stealing our vulnerable hearts with his truthfully honest words, and innocent stare. Cuuute.Perhaps o ne of the most memorable scenes from the film is the opening sequence, which immediately draws attention to Virginia Woolfs irreversible decision, intertwined with a beautifully written voiceover of a note devoted her husband that exercises our minds in preparation for the incoming wave of emotions. The three distraught women and their lives are carefully woven together into a fluid piece of artistic interpretation. But in the end every life must continue, no matter how dull it may be. Tensions crescendo. Fears arise. The once-somber mood is finally uplifted and brightened when a series of fresh, blooming flowers are shot to complete the sequence with an excellent finish. The emotionally driven power of the themes featured in The Hours automatically select the targeted age group to mature audiences, as the multi-layered plot is possibly too chunky to digest for younger audiences. A certain fascination with mortality is explored by the female trio, who are explicitly sensitive, posses sing a clear perception of the revolving world. Constant evaluations are made by each of the main characters, questioning their monotonic lifestyles. The common through-line can be identified between the victims.David Hares masterfully constructed screenplay for the film stays faithful to Cunninghams novel and the devoted fans that are attached to his work. Hare took confident risks, to approach his duty with maturity. The script produced is not afraid to treat its audience as if they were knowledgeable geniuses. The screenplay successfully communicates the moral of the narrative, that there is a never-ending variation of experiences throughout the course of ones life, where no two days are exactly same. The impeccable costuming, cinematographic and musical aspects of The Hours cover up the puzzling holes in the films plot. Costume designer Ann Roth, did a remarkable job in interpreting the personalities of the characters via fashion [which is essential in many ways], as well as pain ting of eras in which each scene is set in. Kidman sports a simple yet effective prosthetic nose, which allows the audience to see an unrecognisable actress, making her role that much more realistic. Seamus McGarveys artistically gorgeous cinematography, consisting of lingering shots on the deeply, afflicted faces of the three leading women, is probably recognised as the films prominent instrument. An immaculate motion picture is presented as a result of his skillful work. Philip Glass exquisitely composed score is one secret and powerful weapon, which successfully accompanies the story, setting a range of moods and expressing atmospheres in a way that dialogue is occasionally unable to do so. The melodic harmonies produced by an enchanting combination of piano and strings are a vital aspect of the film, establishing and developing the characters by pouring their emotions out. This is somewhat rare in a typical Hollywood film. It is truly the flawlessly calibrated finishing touch to the magnificent creation.Every single inch of detail and aspect of the film from the heart-wrenchingly convincing acting performed by the majority of the cast, to the astounding screenplay and the haunting score is attacked with intelligence, seriousness and meaningfully precise measures which ultimately produced an original and dazzling masterpiece that is The Hours. It goes without any doubt at all, that the film thoroughly deserves its showering praise and awards. The Hours is a definite must-see film of the year.

Spirited Away Summary â⬠English Composition Informal Essay
Spirited Away Summary ââ¬â English Composition Informal Essay Free Online Research Papers Spirited Away Summary English Composition Informal Essay ââ¬Å"Spirited Awayâ⬠is a wondrous fantasy movie about a young girl, Chihiro. In a summer afternoon, Chihiro and her family are on the way to their new home. But they get lost in a glove and find a tunnel in it. They are curious about the tunnel and decide to check it out. They walk through the tunnel and discover a new world behind it. They keep on walking and finally go into a small town where is no one there. Her parents find a restaurant selling tasty food and suddenly feel hungry for it. They eat the food though there is nobody in the restaurant. And then something happens. When the night comes, her parents transform into the pigs for eating the food of Gods. Yes, they are trapped into a world of spirits, including Gods. And she must call upon her courage to find a way to turning her parents into humans, freeing herself, and returning her family to the outside world. In the movie, there are two scenes impressing me. One is the train running on the sea. When Chihiro goes to ask Zeniiba, a wise wizard, for help, she takes the train that is running on a far long railway based on the sea. Although the movie is an animation, the sea is vivid like the real one. I can see even tiny waves and reflection of sunlight. It is so serene and beautiful that I also want to take a trip in this way. The other is in the final part. When Chihiro gets help from her friend, Haku, and goes back to the tunnel, Haku says, ââ¬Å"Go through the tunnel and you can return to your world. But remember one thing that do not look back when you are in the tunnel.â⬠Eventually, Chihiro doesnââ¬â¢t look back and goes through the tunnel smoothly. When I see this scene, I feel that it is kind of familiar to me. And then I find that I have read a story which has the similar situation; that is the story about Orpheus and Eurydice in Greek mythology. In this case, when Orpheus went back from Hades to the upper world, he was also warned that he could not look back at Eurydice who walked behind him until they reached the earth out of the cavern. But he looked when he stepped into the earth, and find Eurydice was still in the cavern. Then, he tried to clasp her but she had faded away. All he got was her final word, ââ¬Å"Farewell.â⬠So I think this part of movie is influenced by Greek mythology, and maybe Chihiro would lose everything if she looked back in the tunnel. ââ¬Å"Spirited Awayâ⬠is a movie of Hayao Miyazaki, the writer and the director of the movie. I like his movies because the stories in his movies are always enthralling and deep; therefore, seeing his movies can not only amuse me, but also let me learn something from it. ââ¬Å"Spirited Awayâ⬠is full of imagination, even beyond the imagination. I am so amazed that Miyazaki can always create what weââ¬â¢ve never seen in the movie. To me, ââ¬Å"Spirited awayâ⬠is a movie that can transports you to a world unlike anything I have seen before just like a mystical journey through my imagination. Tourism in the Experience Economy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Tourism in the Experience Economy - Essay Example The Maori people of New Zealand have had a long history of involvement in tourism and a new wave of Maori operators are seen to have emerged over the last two decades to provide experiences to meet this demand (Taylor 2001). Much of the tourism product in which Maori have been involved, to date, is cultural performance, such as cultural experience evenings (Maori Tourism Taskforce Report 1992). Thecultural experiences offered are commonly promoted by tour operators as "traditional" or "authentic" experiences of Maori culture. Initially the idea of experience economy became known in businesses but today it has extended its roots to tourism. Experience economy is a well thought out contribution in existing economics. Most of the economies in the past were agricultural based economies. And agricultural based economy was based on raw materials. Then there came the industrial revolution and the leisure time became valuable as it was short. People started getting daily bread, ready-made clothes and tinned food. The era of manufactured goods arrived! This industrial revolution lead to economic prosperity by increases wages and decreasing the number of hours worked. Today, majority of the companies and organizations are transforming their services from services to memorable experiences. Such as Pizza Hut is liked by most of the people because it manages to host a child's birthday party. Here, the workers are the actors and people visiting those areas are the visitors and the place acts as a stage. Gilmore and Pine2 (1998) believe that the experiences and services are distinct to each other. They believe that experiences should provide a memorable activity that will remain with a particular individual for a long time. In order to achieve this and in order to develop that product, visitors must be attracted and drawn into the activity in such a way that they feel the sensation and the thrill. And in order to feel the sensation visitors should participate in that activity. This process demands and requires highly skilled personnel who can personalize each event according to the behavioral traits, the needs and the response of the guests. Providing experiences is not an easy job. It demands and requires a new supplierperspective. Suppliers of such goods consider themselves as manufacturers. It is important for the companies that they should themselves as stagers of events and not just the manufacturers of various products. Like any theatrical event, there should be a designed activity for the sets and dialogue scripting. Actors need to dynamically select individual sentences in response to the body language, questions and statements. In order to be sensational and an experience of thrill for the visitors, it has to be an interactive experience in such a way that the guest has more influence on the actions than the actors. In some situations where the experience is sensitive type then we cannot expect the visitors to open up and engage in that activity on the first encounter. Sometimes it may require a number of encounters so that they reveal themselves over a period of time.3 The process of designing services that convey unforgettable personal experiences is a combination of art, development, knowledge and skill, and an art that is poorly understood. Theatre industry is considered to be someone with perfect control over the process of staging plays.4 An experience enter the minds of the

Exchange Rates - Coursework Example In addition to that, it enhanced the income tax rates, cost of capital, sales growth rate which in return maximized profits. Minimization of transaction costs leverages exchange rates with a target of maximizing profits (Ostrow, 2011). To Kill A Mockingbird - Scouts Maturity :: To Kill a Mockingbird Essays
As people grow in life, they mature and change. In the novel , To Kill a Mockingbird ,by Harper Lee, Scout, the main character, matures as the book continues. Slowly but surely, Scout learns to control her explosive temper, to refrain from fistfights, and to respect Calpurnia, their maid, and to really learn her value to the family. Scout simply changes because she matures, and she also changes because Atticus, her father, asks her to. In the early chapters of the book, Scout picks fights at the slightest provocation. One example of this is when Scout beats up Walter Cunningham, one of her classmates, for ââ¬Å"not having his lunchâ⬠, which isnââ¬â¢t a very good reason at all. ââ¬Å"Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop. ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢re biggerââ¬â¢n he is,ââ¬â¢ he said â⬠¦ ââ¬ËHe made me start off on the wrong foot.ââ¬â¢ â⬠¦ ââ¬ËLet him go Scout. Why?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHe didnââ¬â¢t have any lunch,ââ¬â¢ I said, and explained my involvement in Walterââ¬â¢s dietary affairsâ⬠(27). Scout is also very mischievous and has a devious mentality towards Calpurnia. She describes Calpurnia as a tyrannical presence, and she does everything she can to get her out of the house. One time Scout does this is when Walter comes over to her house to eat dinner. Scout criticizes Walt er for drowning his food in molasses, and Calpurnia scolds Scout. After Walter leaves, Scout asks Atticus to fire Calpurnia, which of course he doesnââ¬â¢t do. ââ¬Å"Jem said suddenly grinned at him. ââ¬ËCome on home to dinner with us, Walter,ââ¬â¢ he said. â⬠¦ Walter stood where he was, biting his lip. Jem and I gave up, and we were nearly to the Radley Place when Walter called, ââ¬ËHey, Iââ¬â¢m cominââ¬â¢!ââ¬â¢ While Walter piled food on his plate, he and Atticus talked together like to men, to the wonderment of Jem and me. Atticus was expounding on farm problems when Walter interrupted to ask if there was any molasses in the houseâ⬠¦ Walter poured syrup on his vegetables and meat with a generous hand. He would probably have poured it into his milk glass had I not asked what the sam hill he was doingâ⬠¦ It was then that Calpurnia quested my presence in the kitchenâ⬠¦ She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurniaââ¬â¢s grammar became erraticâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s some folks who donââ¬â¢t eat like us,â⬠she whispered fiercelyâ⬠¦ Jem and Walter returned to school ahead of me: staying behind to advise Atticus of Calpurniaââ¬â¢s iniquities was worth a solitary sprint past the Radley Place.

Factors affecting students academic performance in English 11 Essay
Factors affecting the academic performance in English 11 of first year AB-English students of the School of Arts and Criminology Introductionà Academic performance is one of the crucial areas of a learnerââ¬â¢s life. Some learners may not be bothered if they progress or not, however, their parents are left with great distress if their children do not perform. This is because families, as well as the government invest in the education of child. On top of that, generally all parents would want their children to be successful citizens in future. ââ¬Å"When young people fail at school, it is most often not because they are stupid, crazy or psychologically incapable. Rather, it is because they have not been taught the developmentally appropriate tools, skills and strategies every child needs to succeed in school and in life. ââ¬Å" John Jay, stated that multiple factors come to play when it comes to academic performance of a learner, which need to be considered should one want to perform better. Research has found that determinants of learnersââ¬â¢ performance have been the subject of on-going debate among educators, academics and policy makers. Different people believe that different factors affect learners differently under different circumstances. However there are some form of consensus on general factors that affect that performance. These include socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors. Different people come from different backgrounds ââ¬â not everyone can afford school fees, for example, and therefore some children may not attend school properly because of such reasons, which may affect their academic performance at the end of the day. Smoking, alcohol, time spent sleeping and stress all have a great affect on studentsââ¬â¢ academic performance ( Pat & Tyler). Learners need to take care of their personal health, which includes eating healthy, doing exercise, getting enough sleep and rest. Behaviors such as smoking and drug usage may impact the school performance as these interfere with the brain functioning. Stress has been found to interfere with performance, and should therefore be taken seriously. Many factors can cause stress, including financial constraints, child abuse, parental neglect, irresponsibility and divorce, among many others. If a child is stressed, they may not focus on their schoolwork as their minds are often occupied by disturbing thoughts that may not leave room for them to study as effectively as they ought to do. Negative thoughtsà can trouble a child and escalate into suicidal thoughts. These thoughts can lead to self-destructive behavioral patterns, but the thoughts in themselves can already be distracting from schoolwork and therefore directly and indirectly have an impact on academic performance. Some learners wish to progress in school, but they might not always perform as they wish, even if they feel they are trying their best.
